Hunger in southeast Wisconsin
In urban areas like the City of Milwaukee, a lack of full service grocery stores in low-income neighborhoods has resulted in food deserts, meaning people living in these neighborhoods have little or no access to fresh, healthy food. Lack of transportation compounds the problem. That means families are forced to shop at corner grocery stores and gas station-based markets where prices are higher and the fresh food is scarce. Even if a family qualifies for food assistance, that limited resource is depleted more quickly. Our Food Bank
Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin opened on August 1, 1982 in a small facility with a 600 pound donation of apples. In 1984, we received donated land from the city of Milwaukee to erect a permanent warehouse at its current location on W. Fond du Lac Avenue, just off Interstate 43 on Milwaukee’s north side. Today, our 88,000 square-foot warehouse includes expansive freezer and cooler space enabling us to provide only the freshest, safest products to our 550+ member food pantries, shelters and meal programs throughout 36 counties in eastern Wisconsin, including more than 300 located in 9 counties in southeast Wisconsin.
